Three firemen died fighting a fire in the Four by Four Night club in Rio de Janeiro city centre on Friday afternoon, 18th October. Three other members of the fire brigade were hospitalized at the Hospital Souza Aguiar, with one in critical condition. The fire brigade confirmed the death of the three firemen, but did not disclose their names.
The fire started around 11:30am in an old building where the night club was situated. The premises were empty, so the fire was quickly controlled at first. However a gas leak in the building caused an explosion resulting in heavy debris falling onto the firemen working below. It became apparent that the fire was more serious that initially suspected following the gas leak explosion and the resulting influx of black smoke.
