“I walk away from here with no hate. I’m 74 years old and in my heart, there is room only for love, because it is love that will raise this country up”.
Lula also criticized the unemployment situation in the country and called Bolsonaro a liar on the social media.
“I have no hate from the federal police; I have no hate from the jail employees, I don’t have hate at all from anybody,” he said. “This country can be much better when its government stop lying through the Twitter-like Bolsonaro does.”
After investigation and denouncement from the Operation Car Wash, Lula was sentenced by Moro, charged of receiving 3.7 million from OAS Constructor as part of payment on granting a contract with Petrobras. The amount was intermediated by a reservation of the apartment situated on Guaruja Beach, Sao Paulo, and Lula always denied this charge.
Lula’s sentence imposed by Federal Regional Court was confirmed by the Justice Superior Court in 8 years, ten months, and 20 days. And after that, he had his sentence changed to 12 years and one month in prison.
In his speech, Lula thanked the people who remained around on the site where he was seized for the whole period. He was released after 580 days jailed in the Federal Police Headquarter in the Parana State.
“You cannot imagine how much it means for me to be here together with all of you. In my whole life I spoke to the Brazilian people, I didn’t think that today I would be here talking to men and women whose for those past 580 was shouting good morning Lula, good afternoon Lula, good night Lula, under the rain, or in a 40 degrees sun, or in the cold of 0 degrees”, he said.
Lula emphasized the myth around him. He said that the prison made him stronger and braver to fight, following a strategy used by Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela, using the jail as being a martyr. He knows that even though he was released, his political and legal situation is fragile.
He wasn´t proved his innocent yet. And there is the possibility of his return to jail in the next months.
“It was a strong speech,” says the political scientist Marco Aurelio Nogueira in interview to DW Brazil; “Lula has not much to do at this moment, but speak out. After a year and a half in jail, the worker’s party leader has to show that he still is the leader the people seek.” Says the specialist.
The former president was released one day after the Federal Supreme Court decided for 6 votes against 5, that a condemned can only be jailed after the end of all appeals. That changed the constitution, which since 2016, allows the prison after the conviction in second instance.
The decision from the Supreme Court tends to benefit around 5.000 inmates, numbers from the National Justice Board. Brazil has approximately 800.000 inmates.
